Hospet
Hospet

Hospet lies in Bellary District of northern Karnataka near the Tungabhadra River, 12 km from Hampi, the site of the ruins of the medieval city of Vijayanagara, former capital of the Vijayanagar Empire. The Tungabhadra Dam is here and was built in the twentieth century. It was the entrance gate to the city of Vijayanagar for all travelers coming from Goa and West Coast. A recent phenomenon in this region has been the boom of the iron-ore mining business – hence also known as 'Steel City' because of the presence of many iron and steel industries in this belt.

The world famous Hampi is also just 12 km from Hospet.

Though the town does not have much to offer the visitors, its importance lies in its nearness to Hampi. There was a time when Hampi was the epitome of architectural wonders. Most of the great buildings of this place are now in ruins.
