Konark is located on the eastern part of Orissa state. It is famous for its Sun Temple. Lord Narasimhadeva built the Temple during Thirteenth century. Today The Temple has been enlisted in the World Heritage Site.
The Temple is built in the form of a 24- wheeled chariot of Sun God and is a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture. The sculpture of the chariot is shown along with seven horses. The 24-wheels symbolize the number of months in the Indian calendar or the hours of the day whereas even horses symbolize a week.
Konark is derived from a combination of two words-Kona meaning corner and Ark meaning the Sun. Bhubaneshwar, Konark and Puri are together famous as golden triangle of Orissa.
At the entrance of the Temple there are two huge stone lions and three impressive moods of the sun: the rising sun, the sun at noon and the setting sun at the corners of the Temple. And amazingly the images catch the rays of the sun according to their theme.
The beaches in Konark are renowned for their beauty. You can walk for leisure on the pristine beaches and enjoy the sights of sunrise and sunsets. Konark is the stage for one of the biggest dance festivals of India.
The magnificent Sun Temple at Konark is the
culmination of Orissan temple architecture, and one of the most stunning
monuments of religious architecture in the World. Built by the King
Narasimhadeva in the thirteenth century, the entire temple was designed in the
shape of a colossal chariot with seven horses and twenty four wheels, carrying
the sun god, Surya, across the heavens. Surya has been a popular deity in India
since the Vedic period.
Intricate carvings on the walls of the main
temple are a sight to behold. It is often considered the best among other temples
of its kind and that is saying something when you are talking about the golden
triangle of Orissa which boasts of Sri Jagannath temple and Lingraj Temple of
Puri and Bhubaneswar.
The Sun Temple has lost its many of its original structures to time and disrepair,
but the remaining structures and the remainder of the structures confirm till
today the infinite imaginative power of the artistes of the time and their
inspiring contribution to Vaisnav Culture.
The crowing glory of the temple
architecture of Orissa, the Sun Temple at Konark, plays host to the annual
dance festival featuring Odissi and other traditional dance forms. The open air
stage against the backdrop of the floodlit temple reverberates with the beats
of classical ragas and thalas to transport the audience in sheer ecstasy.
